I hereby sent you pics of my recently finished Theban army set. They were a pleasure to paint.
The Thebans lived on the Greek mainland in the classical era and are mostly known for there short period of hegemony over Greece from 371 until 362 BC. This was during the exceptional leadership of Epaminondas and Pelopidas, two brilliant generals an tacticians who lead the Theban army to two great victories over one of the Greek superpowers and victor of the Peloponnesian war (431-404 BC), the Spartans. There 1st victory was in 371 at Leuctra and the 2nd at Martinea in 362. During this 2nd Pyrrhic victory Epaminondas was killed.
They had gained their strategic superiority by tactical improvements such as longer spears, the use of a wedge-shaped formation of their phalanx. After the battle at Mantinea the Thebans overstretched their strategic goals and were ultimately defeated by the rising power of Macedon under the leadership of Philip II and his son Alexander III. In the battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC the Macedonian phalanx and it’s Allies defeated the Athenian and Theban alliance and ended there hegemony. In 335 BC Alexander’s army defeated the Sacred band of Thebes, the elite military unit of male lovers and afterwards destroyed Thebes the Theban capital.
